Description

A barn dating back to the 16th century, situated on the east side of Tring Rural New Road near Wilstone. The barn is timber-framed and stands on a red brick sill, with dark weatherboarding and a steep roof covered in old red tiles. It comprises four bays facing east. The timber frame features jowled posts and mid-height rails arranged in line, along with long curved braces supporting cambered tie beams. The roof is a clasped-purlin design, with two purlins on each slope. This incorporates a long collar with queen-struts to the upper collar. Curved wind-braces are visible on the lower purlin, while long, straight wind-braces are present on the upper purlin. The barn has flat-laid rafters, and there are holes for wattles on the soffit of the wallplates. A notable feature is the edge-halved scarf joint with bridled butts found in the wallplate.
