Description
The North Barn at Whitehouse Farm, located 30 meters north of the house in Great Gaddesden, is a barn dating from around 1700. It features a timber frame set on a renewed red brick sill and is covered with dark weatherboarding and a steep old red tile roof. This tall barn has three bays and faces south, situated at the north side of the farmyard. Architectural details include jowled posts, unjowled mid-bay posts, and mid-height rail jointed in-line. There are straight tension braces above the rail in the gables, heavy straight braces to the tie-beams, and long straight queen-posts inclined to support a single clasped-purlin on each slope of the roof. Additionally, there are straight wind-braces to the purlins.
