Description
Plough Cottages, located in Jockey End, Great Gaddesden, is a building that originally consisted of two houses and now comprises three. The eastern part dates back to the 16th century or early 17th century, while the western part was built in the 18th century. The front brickwork was added in the 19th century, and the gables were completed in the 20th century. The timber frame is now only visible on the first floor at the rear of the eastern part; the rest of the building is roughcast with red brick front and end walls, topped with steep old red tile roofs.
This long, irregular two-storey range faces north, situated at the corner with Bradden Lane. Each part features three windows on both floors. The ground floor has flush three-light casement windows with small panes and segmental arches. The eastern part has two low plank doors that date back to when it was three separate cottages, while a similar door can be found on the adjoining western part, which also has a gabled porch further to the west. The older eastern section has a three-bay structure with a clasped-purlin roof and stop-chamfered axial floor beams.
