Description

Ballingdon Farmhouse and its attached stable date from around 1600 and have undergone alterations and extensions, particularly to the north in the 19th century and renovations to the south. The farmhouse features exposed timber framing on the first floor at the rear, while the front has a jettied center that is plastered, with red brick casing and end bays. The building has a steep old red tile roof and is a long, two-storey structure set back from the road, facing east. It consists of five bays, with a central entrance beneath a three-bay wide jettied first floor supported by an elaborately moulded oak bressumer that has an ovolo moulded bottom edge. Decorative pargetting includes a diamond shape with a crowned Tudor rose and the initials 'E R'. Each bay has wide casement windows, one on each floor. An internal chimney in the middle bay replaces a larger original from the 17th century, while there are internal end gable chimneys in the added bays to the north and south. The exposed framing at the rear shows three bays with a 4:3:4 panel arrangement, with a rear door in the middle bay and a small cast-iron pump attached to the rear wall featuring a spurred spout and long handle. Attached to the north end is a long, low stable range made of red brick and slate, extending to the east and enclosing the forecourt, which is included for its group value.
