Gate, Piers, And Steps At South Gate To Walled Garden At Beechwood Park School

The gate, piers, and steps at the south gate to the walled garden at Beechwood Park School date from the 18th century. The structure features wrought iron and red brick piers topped with stone coping slabs, along with Portland stone steps and a threshold. The single gate is set within an iron screen positioned between rectangular red brick piers, which are 3 meters high and constructed in Flemish bond, with simple oversailing stone capping. The stone threshold, which is one step up from the outside, extends as a landing to five stone steps leading up from the garden, flanked by monolithic side slabs that are level with the landing.

The iron screen consists of two tall rectangular standards that are elaborately scrolled and topped with scrolled finials, rising higher than the adjacent piers and braced to them by scrolled quadrants from their caps. A narrow rectangular scrolled overthrow panel helps to brace the standards slightly below their tops, featuring a bar that receives the top pivot of the gate and narrow side panels. The lower panels include plain bars and dog-bars, while the upper parts of the side panels display intricate scrolled work.
