Description
The Central Barn at Church Farm, located 50 meters east of the farmhouse in Great Gaddesden, is an early 17th-century barn. It features a timber frame set on a red brick sill wall, with dark weatherboarding and a steep old red tile roof. The barn is tall and consists of five bays, facing west, and includes a gabled projecting porch in the middle bay. The site slopes from north to south. It has jowled posts with unjowled mid-bay posts, and a mid-height rail that is jointed in-line. The barn's structure includes curved braces supporting cambered tie-beams, and a clasped-purlin roof with queen-strut trusses, diminished straight principals, and straight wind-braces on each slope. Wind-braces are present only at the gable ends and in the middle bay. Additionally, squint-butted scarf joints can be found in the wallplates and in each purlin next to the truss.
