Description

These cottages, now divided into four separate dwellings, represent a former 16th-century open hall house, with a later 18th-century addition to the south (No. 1). The construction combines timber framing with black plaster on the sill, plaster and painted brick infill, and painted brick on the ground floor and in the southern cottage. The roof is steeply pitched, covered in old red tiles, and has a half-hipped profile. The main block is two storeys high and five windows wide, facing east. A gabled rear wing projects to the northwest. Dormers with pitched roofs break through the eaves above the second and fourth upper windows. The windows are small-paned, two-light, flush Yorkshire sliding casements. The front doors are three-plank, with one four-panel door towards the centre. A gabled trellis porch covers the entrance to No. 2, and a lean-to, timber-and-tile porch serves No. 4. Inside, a large chimney is visible in the lower bay of the original two-bay hall, and the remains of the framing for the upper part of a large window are visible in the upper bay. An internal chimney was inserted into the south end of the lower bay of the original house and two external chimneys are on the north end. The rear of the building features four gabled dormers, a stair window next to the hall chimney stack, and framing for a small first-floor window in the original two end bays. The eaves of the rear wing are higher than those of the main range. The rear windows are flush two-light casements with plank doors.
