Description

Number 12 (The Tudors) and Number 14 are two adjoining houses located in Great Gaddesden, dating from the early 17th century. Number 12 is believed to have been built around 1620 and was extended into the northern bay of Number 14 in the 18th century. A rear extension to Number 12 was added around 1977, while Number 14 features a short extension at its southern end from the 19th century.

Both houses have timber frames with red brick infill and brick casing at the ground floor, topped with steep old red tile roofs. They form a two-storey range facing east and set back from the road. Number 12 occupies the northern part of the range and has three 3-light windows on each floor, featuring Yorkshire sliding casements with small panes. There is a plank door to the left of the northern window, aligned with an internal chimney and lobby entry. The timber frame of the northern gable includes clasped purlins on a collar. Inside, there is a chimney built in the former cross-passage and a staircase located in the northern gable. The floor levels in Number 12 are higher than those in Number 14.

Number 14 has a gabled brick rear wing, a red tile-hung southern gable, and an external chimney on the southern gable. The front of Number 14 has three windows on each floor, wide-spaced studs, and straight tension braces. The left-hand part of Number 14 appears to be framed as a cross-wing, although this is not reflected in the current roof structure.
