Description

Farm Cottage is a house dating to around 1600, with alterations and extensions made in the 17th and 20th centuries. The southern part may have originally been a byre. It is timber framed with painted brick infill, and has steep old red tile roofs. The rear ground floor is painted brick. The two-storey, four-window house faces east, set back from the road and featuring additional dormer windows to light the upper floor. A single-storey, lean-to extension is at the north end. The plan suggests a longhouse origin, possibly with a two-bay house and a storeyed north bay, and an open hall in the south bay; a chimney projects south into what was formerly a lower byre. The east front of the house has two large hipped dormers, two three-light small-paned Yorkshire sliding casement windows on the first floor, a three-light window on the ground floor, a modern gabled porch with a plank door, and a single- and two-light window to the right. A door leads from the porch into the lean-to, which surrounds the north external gable chimney. The left-hand wing has similar dormers and casement windows on both floors. The rear shows wide-spaced storey-height framing with straight tension braces. Internally, the framing of floors and structural elements is exposed. The roof is a clasped-purlin roof with wind bracing. The north bay has a chamfered and stopped axial floor beam and squared joists, with the original staircase positioned against the rear wall. The hall also features chamfered and stopped joists and an axial beam, along with carpenter's assembly marks.
