Description

Pipers Cottage is a house dating from the late 16th century, with renovations from the 19th century. It is timber-framed with red brick infill and a steep roof covered in old red tiles. The east end and rear wall are cased in red brick, and a lean-to garage at the north end is built of red brick with a slated roof.

The house is a small, two-storey building facing north onto the roadside. Its appearance is similar to depictions made in the 1830s. It has two windows, with a prominent first-floor oriel window featuring four lights and ovolo-moulded detailing. The windows have lattice leaded glazing with 17th and 18th century iron opening lights. A door is located in the left-hand side of the front.

The rear of the property has cambered arches above two-light lattice leaded casement windows on the first floor and a three-light window on the ground floor. There is also a plank door set in a heavy frame, largely aligned with the front door.

Inside, a large internal chimney, aligned with the rear door, serves a single large room to the west. This room has exposed timber framing in the west end, including chamfered axial and cross-beams, and a staircase rising up the west wall, in a space that was formerly partitioned from the main room. A moulded plank door is found on the first floor. The roof has clasped purlins.
