Description

St. Margaret's House is an early 18th-century house that was converted into two houses in the 19th century and later united with a south wing added around 1980. The building is constructed of red brick and features a steep old red tile roof, with some timber framing visible in the north gable. It is a small two-storey house with two structural bays, facing east, and includes a rear outshut and end chimneys. The projecting gabled south wing has a casement window on each floor.

The main house has segmental arches over all windows, with three first-floor casement windows arranged in a 2:1:2 light pattern. On the ground floor, there are two 2-light windows and originally two doors between them; the right-hand door has been converted into a window, while the left-hand door remains in use and features a raised and fielded 18th-century four-panel door beneath a small gabled porch. An offset plinth continues inside the rear outshut, which is likely not original.

Inside, the house has exposed joists on both floors, indicating the presence of former attics above. There are axial beams above the ground floor and cross beams above the first floor. An inserted stair in the left-hand part of the house cuts through the chamfer of an axial beam, indicating it is not original. The roof structure consists of clasped-purlin construction with two bays, featuring inclined straight queen-posts in the central truss (which lacks a collar) and straight wind-braces to the purlins made of large scantling. The building was formerly numbered 5 and 6.
