Description

These are two houses, originally a single house built in the early 17th century or possibly earlier, with extensions and division occurring in the 19th century. The rear of number 1 shows exposed timber framing with red brick infill, while the front has red tile hanging and a red brick ground floor, with plum brick casing to the north-south range. The roof is steep and covered in old red tiles, with a half-hipped design. The house is shaped like a “Z”, with a 1 1/2-story structure divided in the middle of the north-south range, the northern part forming number 1 and the southern part number 2. The windows are casement style with cast iron frames. A large chimney stack from the 17th century is located at the junction of the western wing and the main north-south range; it features two square shafts joined together in a “Z” pattern and a moulded cap. The north wall of the western wing displays straight-brace and exposed framing. The roof has a clasped purlin design, including straight wind braces and a squint-butted scarf joint in the wall plate. Inside, there is a large, 3-centred chamfered arched brick open fireplace on the first floor of the north-south range. Gabled dormers are visible on the western and lower eastern wings of number 2.
