Description
The Dell is a house located in Flamstead Cheverells Green, dating from the 16th century, with a west bay added in the early 18th century and brick infill. The two eastern bays were restored after a fire around 1960, and there are later 20th-century flat-roofed extensions to the north that are not of special interest. The building features a timber frame with red brick and black headers as infill, creating a chequered pattern in the right middle bay. The west bay is faced in red brick laid in English bond, and the house has steep old red tile roofs.
It is a two-storey structure with four windows on the south-facing side, situated halfway down a hillside with the rear terraced into the slope. In front, there is a circular well with winding gear. A tiled lean-to is attached to the eastern end. The windows are flush casement types with small panes, arranged in groups of four, three, or two lights, and there is a three-light casement window made of cast iron on the ground floor. The entrance features a plank door with a flat hood.
Inside, the house has exposed timbers, axial beams, and a lobby entrance next to a large internal chimney stack. One room contains a three-centred chamfered brick arched fireplace, and there is a change of level into the west bay. The roof structure consists of clasped-purlin trusses with collar-and-queen struts and curved wind-braces.
