Description

Amberley is a house dating to the late 16th and early 17th centuries. The front was rebuilt in the 18th century with brick, and the east bay was raised to two storeys and rebuilt in brick during the same period. A west bay and a parallel rear range were added in the 1980s. The house is timber-framed and originally cased with red brick, including blue headers, with 20th-century red brickwork. It has steep roofs covered with old red tiles. The original plan was a lobby-entry design, originally with a large internal chimney at the lower end of the middle bay and a cellar under the west bay. The south front has two storeys, with five windows to the first floor, each a three-light casement with a small gable. The east side has three ground floor windows, and the ground floor windows are four-light casements with segmental arches. The middle two bays of the south front are brick, dating to the 18th century. A gabled porch was added in the 20th century on the west side. The interior features jowled posts, heavy timber rails in the walls, cross-beams, and cambered tie-beams. A former rear stair tower has been replaced by the rear range. A two-storey block to the south-west is not of particular architectural interest.
