Description

Spring Cottage is a house dated 1777, as indicated by a carefully cut inscription in a beam in the east room. The building features a parallel north wing added in the late 20th century. Its timber frame is exposed at the gable ends, with painted brick infill on the south front and a red brick rear block laid in stretcher bond. The house has steep old red tile roofs and is two stories high with three bays, facing south. There is a similar block at the rear that also faces the road, along with a lean-to outshut at the west end.

The south front is nearly symmetrical, featuring three first-floor windows and a central door. The windows are small-pane casements with three, two, and three lights, and there are segmental arches over the ground floor openings. The central panelled door has a moulded surround, pilasters, and a full entablature, along with a glazed fanlight and panelled reveals. The north block facing the road has two windows on each storey and a recess above the central door, with three-light casement windows and a plank door. Small windows are positioned beside the internal east gable chimney.

The roof structure is a clasped-purlin design with queen struts below the collar in the gable trusses. There is a later external chimney on the south slope of the west gable. The interior has an unusual plan with opposed doors, and the staircase in the middle bay opens to the main room in the east bay, which features a chamfered cross-beam with the inscription and the only large fireplace. The axial beam in the west bay was originally unheated. This building was formerly known as Shepherd's Cottage, serving as the residence for the shepherd of the Beechwood Estate.
