Description

Two adjacent barns at Roe End Farm, located 45 meters to the southwest of the house, include a west barn from the late 16th century and an east barn from the early 17th century. Both barns have timber frames resting on low brick sills, are dark weatherboarded, and feature steeply pitched roofs now covered in green painted corrugated iron.

The west barn is taller and consists of four bays, with a gabled porch on the south side in the second bay from the east. It has jowled bay-posts, unjowled mid-bay posts, a staggered mid-height rail, long straight braces to cambered tie-beams, and inclined straight queen-posts supporting a single clasped-purlin on each slope. The wallplate features an edge-halved scarf joint with bridled butts.

The east barn also has four bays and includes double doors on the north side in the second bay from the east, along with a gabled projection at the rear of the same bay. It has jowled bay-posts, unjowled mid-bay posts, an in-line mid-height rail, straight braces to the wallplate, long straight braces to cambered tie-beams, and slender inclined straight queen-posts carrying a single clasped-purlin on each slope, with straight wind-braces at the gable ends.

There is a separate framed wall originally against the west barn, featuring a collar-and-queen-strut truss and mortices for wall studs beneath the tie-beam. The barns are significant features in the landscape and contribute to the overall character of the farmstead group.
