Description

No. 53 High Street is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the 17th century or earlier, with a front made of 18th-century brick and an early 19th-century shop front. The building features a timber frame that is plastered but covered in red brick, which has been painted on the front and the east wing. It has steep old red tile roofs.

The structure is two storeys with attics and consists of a wide front range and a narrower parallel rear range. There is an old single-storey west range at the back and later brick and tile additions on the east side that step down and end in a low range projecting to the west.

The front of the building has two gabled dormers on the roof slope, with a brick parapet. The front wall displays two wide and one narrow recesses where former windows were located. It has two segmental arched higher flush box sashes that were inserted at the same time as the fine projecting rectangular shop front, which features two windows and a recessed central double door. Each window has large panes arranged three high and four wide. There is a panelled stall riser and two steps leading to the entrance. The east side shows side-purlin roofs for both ranges of the front block, along with a canted oriel window with sashes above a three-light casement and a side door on the left-hand side.
