Description
No. 50 High Street is an inn that has been converted into a shop. It dates back to the 17th century, with the front block reconstructed in the early 19th century. The building features a wooden oriel window added around 1905 and a shop front installed in the 1920s when it was part of the Rothschild estate. The rear half is constructed with a timber frame and roughcast, while the front is made of painted brick. This tall, narrow building has three stories and a cellar, facing south. The second floor has two recessed sash windows, and the first floor features a long rectangular wooden oriel above a glazed shop front with a fascia and door on the right-hand side.
Originally known as The Plough Inn, the property includes stabling in two-storey brick and slate buildings on both sides of a narrow yard at the rear, which are not of special interest. Inside, the ground floor reveals exposed timbers, including a chamfered cross-beam supported by a post with a cyma corbel in the east wall. Massive purlins support the roof of the rear section, which is gabled towards the back. In the cellar, there are supports for back-to-back corner fireplaces on the west wall of the house, which have since been removed above.
