Description
Nos. 16 and 17 High Street is a shop and office building, now used entirely as offices, built around 1905 for the Rothschild Estate. This pebble-dashed building features a half-timbered ground floor and steep red tile roofs, showcasing the Arts and Crafts style. It stands 2 1/2 storeys tall and has a corner position facing north. The building includes a triple conjoined dormer above a small jetty and a bold first-floor jetty supported by bull-nosed joists with a moulded bressumer. The joists on the left-hand side project further and are supported by double-curved brackets that hold up a large rectangular oriel window. There is a semi-circular hood over the corner entrance. The upper floors have small panes in the transomed casements, while the ground floor shop windows feature small panes set between timber uprights. A sash window on the right-hand side also has small panes at the top. The gables have plain bargeboards and long curved wrought iron gutter stays. This building contributes to the picturesque character of the square in front of the church and is included for its group value.
