Description
Nos. 56 and 57 on High Street are two houses that have been combined into a restaurant. They date from the 17th century or earlier, with an 18th-century plastered front and a 19th-century shop front. The buildings have a timber frame with red-brick nogging at the rear, and the front is plastered and lined to resemble ashlar. They feature steep pitched roofs, covered with old red tiles on the back slope and slates on the front slope.
The two-storey L-shaped houses face south and have two-storey and attic rear wings, with a carriageway entrance at the right-hand end of the front. The front has three windows, which are small paned flush windows with moulded surrounds. The long 19th-century shop front includes two doors, a fascia, and segmental heads above the lights. There are four-panel half-glazed doors that lead up steps, and high boarded double gates provide entry.
Inside, the building has axial beams, a stair at the rear, and chimneys on the rear wall. The exposed frames at the rear show step-jowled posts, clasped-purlin roofs, and straight braces.
