Description

Chapel Cottage and Swans Cottage are a pair of semi-detached cottages located on Walden Road in Sewards End, dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century. They are timber-framed and rendered, featuring a thatched gabled roof. Each cottage is one storey with attics and has a central ridge stack, along with 20th-century gambrel plain tiled roofed extensions on their flanks.

No. 46 has one eyebrow dormer window with a 19th-century two-light casement that includes a single horizontal glazing bar. The ground floor features a similar window and a catslide thatched roofed porch. No. 48 has two eyebrow dormers, each with a 20th-century two-light casement. Its ground floor has a similar window and a larger catslide porch.

Both cottages include inglenooks and an oven door opening. Inside, there are stop-chamfered spine beams and partitions with curved bracing interrupting the studs, which are exposed with infill removed in No. 48. The cottages also have short principal rafters linked by collars, with superimposed purlins and short jack rafters above.
