Description
Number 22 is a house located on the west side of the drive to The Tower, opposite Tylers in Saffron Walden. It dates from the late 18th century to early 19th century, with an early 20th-century rear addition. The building is timber-framed and plastered brick, with a combination of clay tiles and slate on the roof. It has an L-shaped plan and is a single storey.
The front east elevation features a long two-window range beneath a hipped tiled roof. The windows are 'Gothick' style, consisting of two-light lancet iron casements with leaded glazing, and they have original wooden shutters that are hinged in the middle. The doorway is off-centre and consists of two long fielded panels. There is a central ridge stack that is rendered.
At the rear, the access is overgrown, but a brick wing can be seen at the south end, which has a slate roof and one early 20th-century two-light casement window. Additionally, there is a protruding bread oven located at the rear of the stack.
