Description
No. 37, Walden Road is a house dating from 1818, with possible earlier origins. It is timber-framed and plaster, with flint and red brick dressings, a red brick stack, and a slate roof. The plan is L-shaped. The south-facing front elevation has three windows, reflecting two distinct constructional units. The western unit is faced in flint and brick with a symmetrical two-window arrangement, dominated by a central four-panelled door. A date stone, “1818”, is positioned above the door, and a simple gabled lattice porch is present. The ground-floor windows are sliding sashes with segmental arched heads. The eastern unit is timber-framed and rendered, with a single window. It has a simple door alongside a 20th-century casement window, and a sliding sash window above on the first floor. The north-facing rear elevation mirrors the front, with a division in the centre. The west end features a blank flint and cobble wall. The east end projects with a two-storey integral lean-to; the ground floor is brick with a sliding sash window and a simple 20th-century two-light casement. On the first floor, the lean-to is plastered timber framing. The east-facing elevation displays plastered framing with a boarded door at the west end and a 20th-century casement window above. The west-facing elevation is blank, constructed of flint and brick.
