Description
Malyons is a house dating from the mid-16th century. It features a timber frame and plastered exterior, with the timber frame exposed on the first floor and 20th-century pargetting on the ground floor. The roof is hipped with gablets at each end and covered in peg tiles. The building has two storeys and a long wall jetty on the front, with a 18th-century lean-to on the north end that connects to 20th-century hipped-roof extensions.
The front of the house has an off-centre 20th-century gabled porch showcasing exposed framing and a brick nogged gable. The exposed timber framing displays remnants of several moulded oriel windows and a complete moulded bressumer. The two bays at the south end are 20th-century extensions, designed similarly but featuring a garage opening with a pentice roof in the end bay. The windows are 20th-century timber leaded light casements.
Malyons is a typical four-bay long wall jetty house, characterized by richly moulded bridging joists, spine beams, and common joists with swept stops. The rear wall stack includes a mantel beam with similar mouldings. A central service wall door retains its arched head, and a similar arched head is present at the front door position, featuring sunk spandrels and a moulded surround. The upper floor partitions appear to lack studs, likely using a boarded infill. Scarf joints are halved and bridled, while the floor joists have soffit tenons with diminished haunches.
