Description

Elwyn House is a house built around 1900 as accommodation for Felsted School by Sir R. Blomfield. It has a half H-shaped plan and features two storeys and an attic, with three hipped dormers on the central range. The roof is covered with grey slate, hipped over the forward crosswings, which each have a projecting hipped dormer with small paned, three-light windows. The building is constructed of red brick, with matching crosswings that include three pilasters and two recessed arches enclosing two window ranges, and the ground floor windows have gauged brick arches. The central range has a front that breaks forward, with three windows on the first floor and two on the ground floor, along with a glazed porch to the right and a two-panelled door. Above the central window is a decorative, moulded open segmental pediment that encloses a base and shaft topped with a ball finial, featuring decorative lead flashing. There are stone bands under the cornice, as well as around the ground floor windows and arch jambs. To the right, there is a two-storey bay extension with matching windows and two red brick chimney stacks. The rear of the house has various matching extensions.
