Description
The Rumbles is a house and shop located on Braintree Road in Felsted. It dates back to the 17th century, with 18th century and later additions and alterations. The building is said to contain an original staircase and an 18th century fireplace. It has two storeys and an attic, featuring a plain red tiled roof with pierced ridge tiles. The structure is timber framed and rough cast, with a gable addition on the left side.
The house has three sliding sash windows with glazing bars and a central door that has four panels and two lights. This door is framed by fluted pilasters and a moulded frieze, topped with a flat canopy. The shop area has a 20th century door and shop window on the ground floor, with two 19th century sliding sash windows on the first floor. The gable apex is decorated with batten detailing, and there is an external stack. A square central chimney stack made of red brick from the 17th century is present on the house, along with eight straight double brackets supporting the eaves cornice. The front is enclosed by hooped iron railings and a gate.
