Description
Boote House is a house built around 1596, located at the corner of Chelmsford Road and Braintree Road. It has two storeys and an attic, featuring a long wall jetty facing Braintree Road, as well as jetties on the first floor and attic along Chelmsford Road. The roof is plain and covered with red tiles. The house is timber framed and plastered, with a three-window range of small paned casements on Braintree Road and one range on Chelmsford Road, which includes an angled bay on the ground floor. There is a plank and muntin door on Braintree Road.
Notable features include four curved jetty brackets with carved running foliage, and the bressumer on Braintree Road is intricately carved with flowers and dragons. The front bressumer displays the inscription "George Boote made this house 1596," flanked by floral motifs. A carved grotesque female figure with cloven hooves serves as one of the dragon brackets. Matching brackets can be found on the right side of Braintree Road. The first floor jetty has a plain down-braced bressumer with end and centre pendants, and the roof structure is supported by side purlins.
