Description
7 The Struet is a house and shop that dates back to the 17th century. It has two storeys, an attic, and a basement, with a rendered front above a stone basement and a slate roof. The central attic gable features a small 8-pane sash window. On the first floor, there are four windows, all of which are horned sashes. The ground floor includes, from the left (north) end, a canted oriel window in the first bay, a sash window with marginal glazing bars in the second bay, and in the third and fourth bays, a large late 19th century to early 20th century shop front that descends to street level, along with a doorway to the house. The shopfront has a fascia board with flanking scrolled brackets supported by pilasters, and the central shop door is recessed, with a similar design for the house doorway at the left end. The basement is rusticated and features a single window at street level.
At the rear, there is a 17th century 2-light mullioned window. Parts of a late 17th century stair remain on the upper floors, including turned balusters and a square newel with an oval finial. The 18th century features include chimney pieces, china cupboards, and panelled doors. The shop retains extensive wooden shelving and fittings from a late 19th century draper's shop, as well as a large metal safe from the same period. There is also a tailor's workshop with extensive glazing overlooking the rear courtyard.
