Description
Felsted School is a large school building constructed around 1867, designed by F. Chancellor. It features three storeys and includes a square tower topped with a square spire, which has a clock gable on the left side. To the left, there is a gabled crosswing that extends outward, topped with a smaller circular tower and spire covered in lead. A smaller range with a lower roof is located to the right. The roofs are covered in grey slate, with the main range displaying striated slate. The building is primarily made of polychrome red brick, accented with black brick banding and stone dressings.
The left tower has a clock gable adorned with three stone bands and a clock face set on a stone base. The main tower consists of three stages, featuring a small lancet window at the top and two lower stages with three-light lancet-type windows, all decorated with stone and brick heads and five stone bands. The entrance includes a six-panel door with three panels above, set within a Moorish arched surround formed by two moulded arches with shafts, moulded bases, foliated capitals, and a decorated stone tympanum. A red brick chimney stack is positioned to the right.
The main range has three storeys and eight bays, with each bay featuring a gabled dormer that includes a stone band and a brick circle. Brick relieving arches are present above the ground and first-floor windows, which are all three-light windows with glazing bars. The building displays four stone bands and various ornamental brickwork. The right crosswing matches the brickwork of the main range and includes an upper window of lights, along with a four-window range featuring square lights and segmental leaded lights. To the left is a two-centred doorway with a door. The right range has two gabled dormers and a combination of two and three-light windows, along with a two-storey, three-window range. A raised gabled porch is located to the left, accessible by steps, and there are two red brick chimney stacks on this range.
