Description

Angelgate Cottages is a terrace of 16 former coastguard cottages built in 1858. The cottages are constructed of red Flemish-bond brickwork with Gault brick dressings and feature large storey-height diaper patterns of black headers. The roofs are made of 20th-century imitation slate with hipped ends. The layout is U-shaped, consisting of a two-storey courtyard group with a long northwest-southwest terrace of nine units, a shorter detached terrace to the northeast with three units, and a terrace of four units to the east.

The standard unit has an eaves cornice with paired brick dentils, a raised Gault brick band at the first-floor level, and a projecting porch with a lean-to roof that is shared by pairs of adjoining units. The first floors feature two grouped double-hung sash windows with two vertical glazing bars, segmental-arched brick heads, and keystones. The ground floors have two similar but narrower windows, each with a central vertical glazing bar, stone sills, and rectangular corbels. Each porch has a semicircular arch-headed door, flanked by two grouped semicircular-headed casements with a cross pattern of glazing bars, decorative brick aprons, and false sills below. All arches include brick keystones, and the spandrels are rendered. There are very large ridgeline stacks, one for each two units. Number 16, located at the northeast corner, is a larger unit with similar detailing but features a main block with a pyramidal roof. The cottages also have walled yards to the rear, each containing a contemporary outhouse.
