Description

This is a terrace of ten cottages located in Bridgwater, built around 1840 to 1860. The cottages are constructed of cream-coloured Flemish-bond brick, though much of the brickwork is now rendered. They have a continuous roof covered with zig-zag patterned tiles that sweep down to the eaves, with red brick chimneys on the gable ends and party walls. The cottages' internal layouts are double-depth, with some single-storey extensions at the rear.

Each cottage is two storeys high and has a two-window front, with doors on the left side, except for numbers 1 and 17 at the ends, which have a symmetrical three-window frontage. The windows have flat brick arches, continuous ceramic bands, palmette detailing at the eaves, and foliate scrollwork between the floors. Semicircular recesses above the 20th-century doors contain decorative features. Number 1 retains original 2/2-pane sash windows to the first floor, the ground floor left, and a similar tripartite window to the right. A 20th-century porch and door have been added. The end cottages, numbers 1 and 17, are slightly shallower and set back at the rear; number 1 has three 2/2-pane sash windows at the rear. The interiors have not been inspected.

The terrace forms a significant group with the nearby docks.
