Description

This is a 19th-century brick kiln located on East Quay in Bridgwater. It features a conical structure made of brick, reinforced with wrought-iron bands, and is surrounded by low lean-to buildings. Inside, a baffle wall was added later to convert the kiln to a down-draft system. This kiln is an important remnant of a significant 19th-century industry that produced ornamental bricks, terracotta architectural ornaments, and various types of pantiles, known as Bridgwater tiles, which were exported globally, often as ballast.
