Description
This is a terrace of four houses built in the early to mid-19th century. The houses are constructed of Flemish-bond brick, with plain tile roofs, brick stacks to the party and end walls, stone parapet coping, stone cills, and stepped voussoirs to the flat arches above the windows. The houses have double-depth plans and are each two storeys high with a symmetrical three-window front. Numbers 3 and 4 are stepped forward and feature curved corners, while numbers 5 and 6 are connected by a serpentine curve. Number 6, the house on the left, has plate-glass sash windows without horns, a 20th-century front door, and a vertical joint indicating a later addition. The other houses have six-pane sash windows. Number 5 retains an early 19th-century six-panel door with a looped cast-iron pendant knocker; number 4 has a late 19th-century door with two rows of three vertical panels, and number 3 has a 20th-century door. A plaque with the words "VALETTA PLACE" in raised iron letters is set into the parapet between numbers 3 and 4. The interior of number 3 includes a cast-iron grate on the first floor. The front wall in front of numbers 3 and 4 is an English-bond brick structure approximately one meter high, with a bull-nose capping. A high limestone rubble wall is located to the rear of number 3. Local tradition suggests that number 3 was once occupied by a sea captain, and the terrace’s name relates to his connection with Malta.
