Description

Dock Cottages are two semi-detached cottages located in Bridgwater, dating from the early 19th century and enlarged later in the 19th century. They are built of Flemish-bond brick and feature shallow-pitched slate roofs, with a hipped roof on the central block and bracketed eaves on the two-storey forward-facing gabled wings. The rear extensions of these wings also have hipped roofs, and there are brick stacks on the ridges of the wings and the party wall. The cottages have an H-shaped plan and are two storeys high, with a symmetrical four-window range, where each cottage has a two-window range.

The windows have flat gauged brick arches and are mostly 20th-century replacements. The main block is set back and has a window at eaves level for each cottage above a continuous slate-roofed verandah that covers the 20th-century doors. The forward-facing outer wings feature larger windows, with ground floor windows set in cambered-arched recesses that have stone keystones. The right side of No. 1 has two similar but wider recesses on a rubblestone plinth, which may indicate a former building. The wings are constructed of old Bridgwater brick on the ground floor and Flettons on the first floor, suggesting that they were enlarged in the mid-19th century.

Inside the right-hand cottage, there is one room to the left, cupboard stairs, and a tongued-and-grooved screen wall at the landing. The two rooms to the right have fireplaces that back onto a central stack. The cottages are included for their group value.
