Description
The County Library, originally built as a Corn Exchange around 1865 at a cost of £1,600, is located on the south side of Manningtree High Street. It closed around 1875, became a public hall, was later converted into a church by Raymond Erith, and is now a public library. The building is constructed of brick with a stucco finish and features three two-storey bays, with the inner bay raised and set back. It has parapets with moulded cornices and a block finial on the central bay. The outer bays have horizontal upper and lower vertical sunk panels, each containing a round-headed window in the lower panels. The central bay is highlighted by a portico supported by four Ionic columns, leading to a set of central panelled double doors, with square lights on either side. Above the portico is a band featuring three graduated semi-circular recessed arches, with the smaller outer arches having sunk square panels above them.
