Description

The County Library, dated 1852, was formerly known as the Corn Hall and Agricultural Library. It is constructed of squared coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and consists of two storeys. The lower storey features an open loggia supported by four Roman arches. The building has ashlar quoins and four tall sash windows set in rusticated surrounds, each topped with small cornices. There is a moulded band and eaves cornice, and the roof is parapeted with gables covered in tiles. A moulded stone cartouche displaying the date 1852 is located above an inscribed marble tablet dated 1887, which commemorates William Penny Brooks. The County Library, along with Nos 53 to 61 (consecutive) and No 63, forms a group.
