Description

Nos. 17 and 19 on Manningtree High Street are a large building housing three shops, dating from the 18th century, with a red brick facade that may have earlier origins. The right side of the building is now plastered, and it features a red pantiled roof with chimney stacks at both gable ends. The structure is three storeys high and has a plastered parapet, a brick parapet band, and a band between the first and second floors.

The facade includes a ten-window range, primarily consisting of small paned vertically sliding sash windows with gauged brick arches. The five windows on the right side of the second floor are small paned casements. Each shop front has distinct features: on the left, the Foster Prior shop has a 20th-century plain plastered surround to the left window and a small paned door on the right. The central shop, Le Fleur, showcases capitals and bases to panelled and fluted end pilasters, fluted double brackets supporting a panelled and moulded pediment, with a fascia featuring a moulded cornice. The left side has a six-panelled door, with a matching pilaster extending to the height of the fascia on the right. To the left of this doorway are recessed double doors, which are glazed and topped with arches, with panelled bases and a fanlight above.

The building also has a plinth with a moulded base and cornice, and an attached arcade of three bays, with the left bay enclosing the doorway. This arcade features panelled plinths, moulded bases, rings, and carved capitals on the shafts, with semi-circular arches and roundels in the spandrels, and pendants hanging from the arches. On the right, the Aldis Fashions shop has a 20th-century fascia and a left recessed glazed door accessed by steps, with a plain window to the right.
