Description

The Old Coffee House is a restaurant located on South Street in Manningtree. It has origins dating back to the 15th century and was rebuilt in the 16th century, with the exception of the east end. An additional storey was added in the 18th century along with other alterations, and the building underwent restoration in the 20th century.

The structure is timber framed and plastered, featuring brick nogging infill on the ground floor beneath a jetty. The roof is covered with red plain tiles, hipped towards South Street and extending out to the right. It has a moulded and dentilled eaves cornice. The building is three storeys tall on South Street, with a single storey on the right return and a jetty to the left.

On the first and second storeys, there are four-light casements with transoms to the left, while the right side of the first floor features a small-paned vertically sliding sash window. The ground floor to the right has a three-light shop window, complete with a fascia and a moulded flat canopy. The exposed jetty beams and the ground floor frame are visible below. There are four-light windows on the left and two-light windows on the right, all with moulded mullions and carved cills, and a taller central five-light mullion with moulded pilasters.

To the right, there is a door framed by moulded jambs, a head, and a frieze, with moulded end pilasters. The five pilasters support arched jetty brackets, and there is a plinth with a step approach leading to the door.
