Description
Tan Cottage and The Old Cottage are two cottages that date back to the early 15th century or earlier, with later alterations and additions. The buildings are timber framed, with the left front of Tan Cottage plastered and the right side weatherboarded, featuring some painted brick. They have a red plain tiled roof and two red brick chimney stacks, one at the ridge and one external to the right. The cottages are two storeys high, with a total of nine windows on the first floor, some of which in Tan Cottage have original ovolo mullions and small paned horizontal sliding sashes. The ground floor has eight windows, again with some original mullions in Tan Cottage. There is a 20th-century enclosed gabled porch with a vertically boarded door for Tan Cottage, and a 20th-century door for The Old Cottage. Tan Cottage, which is on the left, is the original building, while the right range contains remains of an earlier structure. Inside, there is a back-to-back inglenook fireplace, partly restored on one side. The heavy timber frame is visible, featuring widely spaced wall studs, a halved and bridled top plate scarf, stop-chamfered bridging joists, and a heavily roll and fillet moulded bridging joist. The structure also includes jowled storey posts and a heavy arched brace to the tie beam, along with some 18th-century vertically boarded doors.
