Description
This is a 19th-century milepost located on the southern verge between Bentley Brook and the Colchester Bypass Roundabout. Made of cast iron, it was produced by Stanford and Company in Colchester. The milepost has a triangular shape with a gabled head that displays the inscription "Parish of Great Bentley." Below this, it features the foundry name and town. One side indicates the distance to Colchester (7 miles) and Great Bentley, while the other side shows the distance to Thorpe (Le Soken) (5 miles) and Great Bentley. This milepost is notable as one of the few identifiable castings from the Stanford Foundry.
