Description

Crabtree Farmhouse is a house that dates back to the 16th century or earlier for the left range, with an 18th-century right range, and a 19th-century red brick rear range along with other alterations and extensions. The building is timber framed and plastered, topped with red plain tiled roofs, with the right range featuring a hipped roof. There is a chimney stack located to the right of the left range.

The left range has two vertically sliding sash windows with glazing bars. The 18th-century right range faces west and is finished in ashlar line plaster, featuring projecting eaves supported by brackets. This range consists of three bays, with the central bay being bowed. The first floor has two light casements on the right and left, while the central window is blocked. The ground floor includes tall tripartite casements with glazing bars on both sides, and a central bowed doorway with top lights above the door.

Inside, notable features include an inglenook fireplace with a mantel beam, chamfered bridging joists, exposed wall studs, and two square-headed service doorways that are now blocked leading to the living room. There is a restored mullion window on the rear wall and a halved and bridled top plate scarf. The staircase by the chimney is accompanied by an 18th-century staircase in the front range. The interior also contains two 18th-century corner cupboards, one of which is not in its original position, and an 18th-century cupboard range in a bedroom that is also not in situ. The 18th-century rooms feature a moulded cornice and an 18th-century cast iron hob grate. The 18th-century windows have panels underneath that open inwards, likely to facilitate furniture access.

The 19th-century section has a scratch date of 1822. During roof repairs, newspapers dated 1782 and 1892 were discovered and are still kept by the owner. The farmhouse was shown as Crabstalks on the Chapman and Andre Map of 1777.
