Description

House. The farmhouse likely began as a 17th-century rear range, with a front range built around 1700, and later alterations and additions. The construction is timber-framed with 18th-century red brick returns and rear walls. A scratch date of 1708 is visible, and the facade is red brick dating to the 19th century. The roof is covered in red plain tiles, with chimney stacks on the right, left, and rear. The house has two stories and attics. There are two flat-headed dormers with small paned horizontal sliding windows. The front has a three-window range of vertically sliding sash windows with glazing bars. A central, gabled porch made of red brick, with fish scale slates, features a part-glazed door with coloured glass margins.

The front range’s interior retains the complete frame from around 1700 and includes a staggered side purlin roof with carpenters’ marks, boxed-in bridging joists, panelled and vertically boarded doors with original ironmongery, and two 18th-century cast iron basket grates with moulded surrounds. A large open red brick fireplace has a mantel beam in the ground floor left room, and a moulded surround in the ground floor right room. Some rooms have later horizontal boarded walls. A slatted light is located on the landing.

The rear range features stop-chamfered bridging joists, panelled and vertically boarded doors with ironmongery, a slatted door vent to what was formerly a dairy , original shelves in the larder, brick floors, and large fire surrounds with mantel beams above the kitchen fireplace.
