Description
The Algiers and The Village Stores, located on the north side of Canewdon High Street, is a building dating from the 18th century with later alterations and additions. It consists of three sections, with a single-storey outbuilding on the right side that is incorporated into the shop. The house on the left is one storey with attics, featuring a half hipped gambrel roof that includes upper and lower pairs of catslide dormers. There is a central red brick chimney stack. The two eaves level dormers and the ground floor windows are fitted with 2 and 3-light small paned casements, respectively, while the upper dormers have 2 lights each with two transoms. The central entrance is a 20th-century small paned door. There is a single-storey lean-to on the left return. On the right side, there are two gabled ranges, with the central range being weatherboarded and the right range plastered. A hipped red tiled porch extends across the width of the ground floor to the right forward extension, enclosing the glazed shop front and door. The first floor features 1:1 two-light small paned casements. There are also 20th-century rear extensions.
