Description
The Anchor Public House is a public house located on Canewdon High Street, with origins dating back to at least the 16th century, featuring alterations and additions from the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as later modifications. The building is timber framed and has a painted brick facade with dentilled eaves cornices. It has left and rear off-centre chimney stacks and a roof with three levels facing the road; the right side has a hipped roof to the left, while a gable from a rear range rises above the ridge. The structure is two storeys high, with a first floor that has three windows arranged in a 1:1:1 pattern, and a ground floor with a 1:1:3 arrangement of small paned vertically sliding sash windows. The ground floor windows have segmental heads, except for the left corner window, which has a return window facing Anchor Lane, along with a frieze and cornice above. The entrance features a vertically boarded door with a simple surround and a flat canopy on brackets flanking the left and right ranges.
