Description

The Vicarage is an 18th-century house with alterations from the 19th century, located on the south side of Canewdon High Street. It is constructed of red brick with some black headers, and has a red plain tiled roof. Red brick chimney stacks are positioned at the right end and off-centre to the left, with a crow-stepped gable on the left. The building is two storeys high and features an eaves cornice. The fenestration is arranged in a 2:1:3 window range of vertically sliding sash windows, with segmental arches above each. The gable window on the left has a round-headed recessed arch on the first floor and a ground-floor French window. A 19th-century gabled porch with black brick diapering is located to the right of the gable, featuring bargeboards with a pendant, a moulded collar with a small up-braced king post, a round-headed doorway in a square head, and a vertically boarded door.

Inside, the house retains original features, including a staircase with two turned balusters to each tread, a moulded open tread, and a panelled dado. There are two 18th-century fire surrounds and an early 19th-century fire surround. Other original elements include six-panelled doors with moulded surrounds, moulded wainscots, dentilled and moulded cornices in some rooms, and internal panelling. A memorial in the nearby church records that George Walker M.A. built the Vicarage House in 1738.
