Description

SUTTON SHOPLAND HALL ROAD TQ 88 NE Barn about 90m south 11/10000 of Shopland Hall II Barn. Circa early C18. Timber-framed, weatherboarded, tarred brick plinth. Corrugated asbestos sheet roof with gabled ends, formerly thatched. Plan: Five-bay barn; the central threshing bays has midstrey on west side. Later outshuts on west side. Exterior: West front has gabled midstrey at centre with C20 double doors, flanked by weatherboarded and brick outshuts. East side has smaller double doors at centre. Interior: Frame intact; built of new oak. Large wall studs, no mid-rail and straight tension braces; sole-plate on brick plinth. Unjowled posts with knees replacing tie-beam braces. Side purlins clasped between collars and principal rafter couples without ridgeboard. Similar midstrey roof but with clasped purlins only.
