Description

The barn located about 90 meters south of Shopland Hall is a Grade II listed structure, dating from the early 18th century. It features a timber frame and is weatherboarded with a tarred brick plinth. The roof is made of corrugated asbestos sheets with gabled ends, which originally had thatch.

The barn has a five-bay layout, with a central threshing bay that includes a midstrey on the west side. There are later outshuts added to the west side. The west front of the barn has a gabled midstrey at the center, which is flanked by weatherboarded and brick outshuts, and it features 20th-century double doors. The east side has smaller double doors located at the center.

Inside, the frame remains intact and is constructed from new oak. It includes large wall studs with no mid-rail and straight tension braces, and the sole-plate rests on the brick plinth. The posts are unjowled and have knees that replace the tie-beam braces. The side purlins are clasped between collars and principal rafter couples, and there is no ridgeboard. The roof over the midstrey is similar but features only clasped purlins.
