Description

Butlers Farmhouse is a house from the 18th century, possibly of earlier origin, located on the north side of Shopland Road in Sutton. The building is timber framed and weatherboarded, topped with a red plain tiled double range roof. It features chimney stacks on both the right and left sides of the front range, as well as a central chimney stack at the rear. The farmhouse has two storeys, attics, and a cellar, with a five-window range of small paned vertically sliding sashes that have moulded surrounds. There are three dormers with two-light casements that include centre transoms. The central entrance is a six-panelled door with a moulded surround, key block, and a moulded open pediment supported by brackets, accessed by a step approach with side railings.

Inside, the farmhouse has internal shutters on the windows, stop-chamfered bridging joists in the kitchen, and a very large chimney stack with a moulded surround, mantel shelf, and an iron pot hook. The ceiling beams have meat hooks, and the stairs are adorned with turned balusters. The doors are vertically boarded and feature original ironmongery. There is also a very small cast iron stove heater in the attic. The farmhouse is situated on a moated site, and over the moat stands a 19th-century timber framed and weatherboarded toilet, which retains the original three-seater bench.
