Description

Fox Hall Farmhouse is a house that dates back to the 14th century, originally featuring an open hall. The west end was rebuilt in the 16th century, and the entire structure was re-roofed in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, with a three-bay crosswing added to the west in the 15th century. The building is timber-framed, covered in weatherboarding, and has a tiled roof. A 16th-century external red brick chimneystack with an oversailing cap is located at the west end of the main block.

The farmhouse is two storeys high with attics. The south front has a three-window range featuring double-hung sashes with glazing bars, which were boarded up at the time of the survey. Inside, one bay of the open hall remains, showcasing hollow-chamfered braces, an arched service doorway, and possibly another doorway concealed within the wall. The roof was re-assembled in the late 17th or early 18th century, reusing many sooted medieval rafters. A late 16th-century chimneystack was added at the parlour end, featuring a fine four-centred arched brick fireplace. Around 1500, a fireplace was inserted in the cross passage, complete with a wooden bressumer. The 15th-century three-bay cross-wing at the service end has exposed ceiling beams and floor joists, with two pairs of rafters surviving in the roof.
