Description

Trotters is a house located on Southend Road in Great Wakering, with origins dating back to the 16th century or earlier. It has undergone several alterations and additions, including a front range built around 1803. The house features a timber-framed and plastered exterior, topped with a red plain tiled roof that has ornate eaves. A large red brick chimney stack is located at the rear, with a restored right external stack. The building is two storeys high and has a three-window range of small paned vertically sliding sash windows, with a tripartite arrangement on the ground floor to the right.

A central gabled trellis porch with side seats leads to a part-glazed door that has a moulded surround. To the left, there is a 19th-century single-storey range with a grey slate roof and a single window. The older rear ranges show evidence of multiple builds, including a dormer on the rear left range and a round-headed window on the rear right range. The rear wall features old pargetting and iron gutter brackets.

Inside, there is a very large chimney stack in the older part of the building, which is now blocked. It is believed that the hall roof was raised in 1670. Some exposed timber framing is visible, along with a moulded and carved jowled storey post in the kitchen. A heavy cambered tie beam can be found in the bedroom, and there are several early doors with IL hinges and ironmongery. The staircase features a fine wreathed handrail leading to an open well with stick balusters.
