Description
The Sutton Road Cemetery War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was erected between 1920 and 1939 and was moved and re-dedicated in 1998. The architect is unknown.
The memorial is made of carved limestone and features a hooded Calvary cross atop a slender, tapering hexagonal shaft. This shaft rises from a square plinth, which sits on a two-stepped base. The plinth is incised with the names of the fallen, although these names are heavily eroded. At the foot of the memorial, angled plaques repeat the inscriptions. The rededication inscription states: "WE CANNOT TRULY VALUE PEACE UNLESS / WE REMEMBER THE PRICE THAT WAS PAID / AS A SYMBOL OF THAT COST THIS 1914 - 1918 WAR MEMORIAL / FROM THE PARISH OF ST ERKENWALDS IS REDEDICATED / HERE IN COMMEMORATIVE MEMORY OF THE PEOPLE OF / SOUTHEND-ON-SEA WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN BOTH / GREAT WORLD WARS AND SUBSEQUENT CONFLICTS."
